Godavari Biorefineries shares rises 10% on Japanese patent for cancer treatment invention


Shares of Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. gained as much as 10% on Tuesday, June 16, after the company announced that it had been granted a patent by the Japan Patent Office for an invention related to cancer treatment.

In an exchange filing, the company said the patent has been granted for “5-Hydroxy-1,4-Naphthalenedione for Use in the Treatment of Cancer.”

What Does The Godavari Biorefineries Patent Include?

According to the company, the patent covers a novel class of compounds that exhibit strong inhibitory effects on cancer cells and cancer stem cells. The compounds have demonstrated significant efficacy against multiple cancer types, including breast cancer and prostate cancer.

The patent was registered by the Japan Patent Office on May 26, 2026, under Patent No. 7869786, according to the certificate shared by the company.

Godavari Biorefineries said the patented invention relates to the use of 5-Hydroxy-1,4-Naphthalenedione in the treatment of cancer and strengthens its intellectual property portfolio in the healthcare and life sciences space.

The company disclosed that the patent application dates back to October 2021 and names Sandeep Gavade, Sangeeta Srivastava, Prashant Karkal and Maithili Athavale among the inventors.

Godavari Biorefineries is engaged in manufacturing bio-based chemicals, ethanol, sugar, and speciality products, and has been expanding its focus on research-driven products and technologies across multiple sectors.

Shares of Godavari Biorefineries are trading 7% higher after the announcement on Tuesday at ₹303.6. With this, the stock has turned positive for the year. However, the stock is trading below its issue price of ₹352 apiece.
