Kotak Special Opportunities Fund turns 2: How the scheme fared versus its benchmark

Kotak Mahindra Mutual Fund’s Special Opportunities Fund has completed two years since launch, delivering a 4.6% CAGR under the direct plan growth option during a period marked by market volatility and sector rotation.

While the absolute return remained modest, the scheme outperformed its benchmark, the Nifty 500 TRI, which delivered 2.51% over the same period.

The fund generated an alpha of more than 2 percentage points against the benchmark.

The fund house also highlighted that a monthly SIP of ₹10,000 since inception would have grown from a total investment of ₹2.40 lakh to around ₹2.69 lakh, implying an annualised return of nearly 11.9%.

Launched as a special situations strategy, the scheme invests in companies undergoing corporate restructuring, regulatory or policy shifts, technology-led disruption, management changes, or temporary business challenges that could potentially unlock value over time.

Experts note that special situations investing typically plays out over longer cycles and may not always reflect in near-term returns, especially during periods of broader market consolidation.

The scheme follows a market-cap agnostic approach and uses a bottom-up stock selection framework based on business fundamentals, management quality and valuation metrics.

As of the latest available data, the fund managed assets worth ₹1,424 crore. The scheme has been managed by Devender Singhal and Abhishek Bisen since June 29, 2024.

Analysts caution that special situations funds can carry relatively higher volatility and event-related risks compared to diversified equity funds, as investment outcomes often depend on company-specific triggers and execution.

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks, and past performance may not be indicative of future returns.
