CHANDIGARH: Two youths were injured after a speeding Mercedes car hit them outside a nightclub in Sector 26, Chandigarh, on Saturday evening. The driver fled the spot along with the vehicle. Police from Sector 26 police station have launched an investigation and begun searching for the absconding driver. The injured were identified as Amjad, a resident of Bapudham Colony, Sector 26, and Alliance Preet, a resident of Sector 44, Chandigarh. Both were admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, for treatment. According to the preliminary investigation, the two youths had reached the area outside the club in Sector 26 on Saturday evening and were hit shortly after they came out of the establishment. Hearing the commotion, passersby gathered at the spot and attempted to catch the Mercedes driver. Several people recorded videos of the incident on their mobile phones, and the footage later went viral on social media. A viral video shows a speeding Mercedes without a registration number plate allegedly trying to mow down a person by reversing the vehicle. The accused driver later fled the scene at high speed. People were also seen pelting stones at the car in an attempt to stop it. The rear windscreen of the Mercedes appeared damaged in the viral video. After receiving information about the incident, police personnel from Sector 26 police station reached the spot and shifted the injured to the hospital. Police also seized CCTV footage from the area and began efforts to identify the Mercedes car and its driver. Sector 26 police said both injured persons were discharged from the hospital on Sunday after treatment, and their statements are yet to be recorded. A case against the Mercedes driver will be registered after their statements are taken. Police said the accused would be arrested soon based on CCTV footage and other technical evidence. The incident has once again raised concerns over speeding and negligent driving in the city.
