NEW DELHI: After a lacklustre March quarter, National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) cleared 78 resolution plans in April-June – a record for the quarter — while flagging the capacity constraints that it has to tackle.Latest NCLT data pegged the value of the resolution plans approved in April-June quarter at Rs 5,518 crore, taking the overall amount to nearly Rs 4.8 lakh crore since the corporate insolvency resolution process started in 2017-18. Since then 1,628 plans have been approved. As of June 30, 349 applications seeking approval of resolution plans were pending before various benches, while 38 matters had been heard and reserved for orders.
A report released on its website also pointed to the challenges it was facing in its operations. “The Tribunal continues to discharge its adjudicatory functions despite institutional capacity constraints. As on 13th July 2026, against the sanctioned strength of one president, 31 judicial members and 31 technical members, the tribunal was functioning with one president, 26 judicial members and 25 technical members, leaving 11 vacancies in the cadre of members. No appointments of judicial or technical members have been made since Jan 2025. The only appointment during this period was of Justice (Retd) Anupinder Singh Grewal, as the president of the NCLT,” it said.In the past too there have been concerns over vacancies not being filled by govt for months, while infrastructural challenges have also impacted the functioning of the tribunal. The absence of members and a full-time president was the key reason for a slowdown in approvals during Jan-March.
