Sun Pharma Gets ANVISA Approval for Semaglutide in Brazil, Partners with Hypera Pharma for Type 2 Diabetes Treatment Launch

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries has received approval from Brazil’s health regulator ANVISA to manufacture and market semaglutide injections in the South American country for adults with inadequately controlled Type 2 diabetes, the company informed exchanges on Wednesday.

The drugmaker plans to launch the product in the coming days through a partnership with Hypera Pharma, one of Brazil’s largest pharmaceutical companies.

The product will be offered as a pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pen in two strengths, i.e 2 mg/1.5 mL and 4 mg/3 mL, allowing for once-weekly dosing.

Semaglutide belongs to the fast-growing class of GLP-1 receptor agonists, which help regulate blood sugar levels and also aid weight loss. The molecule has emerged as one of the pharmaceutical industry’s biggest growth drivers globally, spurred by demand for both diabetes and obesity treatments.

The market is currently dominated by Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster brands Ozempic and Wegovy, which have transformed the treatment landscape and sparked intense competition among global drugmakers seeking a share of the rapidly expanding GLP-1 market.

According to Sun Pharma, the Brazilian semaglutide injectable market is valued at about $413 million, citing IQVIA data for the 12 months ended June 2026.

“The approval of semaglutide in Brazil expands access to an evidence-based treatment option for people living with inadequately controlled Type 2 diabetes,” said Aalok Shanghvi, Chief Operating Officer, Sun Pharma, adding that the approval reflects the company’s development and manufacturing capabilities.

Digvijay Singh, Regional Head, Brazil & LATAM, said the approval strengthens Sun Pharma’s diabetes portfolio in Brazil and will help expand access to treatment through its partnership with Hypera Pharma.

Sun Pharma shares settled at ₹1,987.50 on the NSE, rising half a percent higher. The pharma scrip has surged nearly 16% so far this year, while the one-year return is also more than 16%.
