Despite weak global cues and pressure in midcaps, strength in autos, select IT names and heavyweight stocks helped the Indian benchmarks close higher. The ability of the Nifty to hold above 24,300 suggests resilience in large-cap counters, even as broader market participation remains subdued.
Here are the five biggest trends from today’s trade:Benchmark indices outperform as broader markets lag
While frontline indices ended in the green, the broader market painted a weaker picture. The Midcap Index slipped 221 points to 62,642, and market breadth remained negative with declines outpacing advances. The divergence highlighted continued caution among investors despite gains in large-cap stocks.
Auto stocks drive the rally
The Nifty Auto index emerged as the top sectoral gainer, climbing close to 2% on strong buying across the board. M&M topped the Nifty gainers list, rising around 2%, while Eicher Motors gained significantly. Hero MotoCorp surged more than 3% on expectations of improved monthly sales, and Maruti Suzuki advanced ahead of its quarterly earnings announcement, providing strong support to benchmark indices.
Reliance Industries, IT stocks cushion weakness in banks
Buying in index heavyweight Reliance Industries and select IT counters helped keep the benchmarks in positive territory. Although the Nifty Bank index fell 58 points to 57,148, it recovered sharply from intraday lows as HDFC Bank and SBI closed in the green, limiting losses in the financial space.
Earnings reactions dominate stock-specific action
Corporate earnings remained a key market driver. MTAR Technologies hit the upper circuit with a 5% gain after strong Q1 results, while Exide Industries rose 4% after reporting double-digit growth across segments. Swiggy gained 3% ahead of its earnings announcement, reflecting positive investor expectations.
Realty, ports and select technology stocks under pressure
Weak earnings and cautious commentary weighed on several stocks. Adani Ports fell more than 3% for the second consecutive session, emerging as the top Nifty loser. KPIT Technologies plunged over 7% following a cautious outlook, while Prestige Estates and Waaree Energies declined 4-5% after disappointing Q1 numbers. Realty remained the weakest sector, with the Nifty Realty index dropping nearly 2%.
