FIIs sell ₹943 crore, but Sensex and Nifty close higher as domestic funds step in


Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net sellers of Indian equities on Wednesday, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) returned to net buyers, according to provisional exchange data.

FIIs sold equities worth ₹943.42 crore on August 5, with their total purchases at ₹15,940.50 crore and sales at ₹16,883.92 crore.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), meanwhile, bought equities worth ₹2,883.17 crore. DIIs recorded purchases of ₹19,353.43 crore and sales of ₹16,470.26 crore during the session.

This marked a reversal from the previous session, when FIIs remained net buyers while DIIs turned net sellers of Indian equities.

However, Indian equities ended largely higher on Wednesday after the Closing Auction Session (CAS) adjustments, with the Nifty closing above the 24,600 mark. The market breadth remained positive, with midcap stocks outperforming the benchmark indices.

The Nifty closed 10 points higher at 24,625, while the Sensex ended 52 points higher at 78,581. Compared with the 3:15 pm levels, the Nifty gained 55 points and the Sensex rose 80 points after CAS adjustments.

The Nifty Bank underperformed the broader market, slipping 167 points to close at 57,740, dragged by heavyweight financial stocks. HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank were among the major laggards in the index.

The midcap index gained 14 points to end at 63,605, with buying interest seen across select stocks. NBFC counters continued to attract investors, with Shriram Finance and Cholamandalam Investment and Finance among the top gainers.

Metal stocks gained as the dollar weakened further, with JSW Steel and Hindalco rising around 2% each. Auto and ancillary stocks also extended gains, with the Nifty Auto index ending nearly 1% higher.

Hindustan Zinc surged 6% tracking strength in silver prices, while Vedanta also moved higher. Among midcap gainers, Jubilant FoodWorks, Bosch, Mphasis and 360 ONE were among the notable performers.

Godrej Properties and PNB Housing Finance gained around 4% each after positive management commentary.

On the downside, Kalyan Jewellers declined 4% after reporting a drop in margins on a year-on-year basis. MCX and BSE fell 2-3% following their June quarter results.

Nykaa and Marico also ended lower despite reporting a healthy set of results.

Separately the Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Wednesday, closing at 95.12 per dollar compared with Tuesday’s close of 95.38 per dollar.
