Fans of the ‘Mirzapur’ franchise finally have something to cheer about. On Tuesday, August 11, the makers of ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ dropped the highly anticipated trailer ahead of the film’s theatrical release in September. The unveiling took place at a star-studded event in Mumbai, bringing together Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, Rasika Dugal and other cast members. The makers were also present at the event as the team marked the beginning of the franchise’s next chapter.

At the trailer launch, Ali had a fun exchange with Jitendra Kumar while discussing the latter’s character introduction in the film. With a smile, Ali welcomed the newest addition to the ‘Mirzapur’ universe, saying, “Aaj ek naye kirdaar bhi hai humare saath. Yeh shuru majboori mein kiye the lekin ab inko mazza aaraha hai (We have a new character with us today. Although he started out of compulsion, he ended up having fun.)” The two then shared a warm hug and a smile, making it one of the more light-hearted moments of the event.

Ali didn’t miss the chance to acknowledge and thank the larger Mirzapur team that has stood behind the franchise all these years. What began with its first season has since snowballed into a massive fan following, with the show’s characters and dialogues carving out a permanent spot in pop culture.

Farhan Akhtar credits fans for bringing ‘Mirzapur’ to theatres

Producer Farhan Akhtar addressed the huge wave of anticipation surrounding the film, crediting the franchise’s fans for pushing the story onto the big screen. He shared that the audience’s demand largely drove the film’s making, with fans eager for the Mirzapur world to make a comeback. “The show is a result of fans’ love. They have supported the show from the time it was first released. Amazon took it across the world. Wherever I used to go, people used to ask me, ‘Ki Mirzapur kab aa rha hai?’ When it was announced, people used to ask me the release date, so it is really the fans that have demanded this movie. We are very happy and grateful to have put it together with the original cast and the amazing new cast,” he stated.

‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ is directed by Gurmmeet Singh, who has also helmed several episodes of the original series, with the screenplay penned by Puneet Krishna, creator of the Prime Video franchise. The film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, alongside co-producers Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani, while Amazon MGM Studios powers the franchise’s leap from streaming to theatres.
