The bandh comes after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directed Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water daily to Tamil Nadu for 15 days from August 12. Pro-Kannada organisations are opposing the directive and are also demanding progress on the Mekedatu, Mahadayi and Kalasa-Banduri projects.
The protest is being led by Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj. Organisers have claimed that more than 2,000 pro-Kannada organisations have extended support to the bandh. But for those living in Karnataka, the key question is how much of normal life will actually be affected and are banks open or closed today.
Are banks open or closed today?
Banks are expected to remain operational during the Karnataka bandh as there is no statewide order directing banks to shut. However, customers and employees in areas affected by protests, road blockades or transport disruptions could face difficulties accessing bank branches.

While public transportation services, hotels, shops and other commercial establishments are expected to be affected, emergency services, such as hospitals and pharmacies, will function as usual.
Schools, colleges and other educational institutions will also continue regular operations. The Karnataka Associated Managements of Schools withdrew its earlier call for schools to remain closed during the bandh. Some schools may allow staff or students to wear black ribbons as a symbolic expression of support for the protest.
Corporate offices and other workplaces are expected to function because there is no state-wide order for offices to shut. Employees, however, may face difficulties reaching their workplaces if public transport is disrupted.
