While ‘Awarapan’ did not emerge as a major theatrical success upon release, its music, intense romantic drama and Hashmi’s portrayal of a troubled gangster gradually earned it a loyal cult following. The sequel appears to be consciously tapping into that sentiment, bringing back the character and the world that fans have remained attached to.
The music is another major nostalgia factor, with the soundtrack carrying the musical identity associated with the franchise and a reprise of the much-loved ‘Toh Phir Aao’ adding to the recall value. For Hashmi, who has experienced several ups and downs at the box office in recent years, the film could provide a much-needed commercial breakthrough. A strong opening combined with positive word of mouth could make ‘Awarapan 2’ one of his most significant successes in a long time.
Running alongside it is Sunny Deol’s ‘Batwara 1947’, a period drama directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan. The film features an ensemble cast comprising Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh. Set around the Partition of India, the story examines the human cost of one of the most traumatic chapters in the subcontinent’s history. Deol plays Sikander Mirza, while Zinta portrays Hamida Mirza and Azmi takes on the role of Mai.
The narrative revolves around a Muslim family that moves into a house in Lahore after Partition, only to encounter the Hindu woman who remains connected to the property, bringing questions of displacement, identity, loss and humanity to the forefront. The film also reunites Santoshi and Deol while bringing Deol and Zinta back together on screen, adding another layer of nostalgia.
Interestingly, Shabana Azmi is the common link between the two Hindi releases, appearing in pivotal roles in both films.
The two Bollywood releases, however, have another major challenge to contend with: Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which has already been playing in Indian cinemas since July 30. Starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, the superhero film has established a strong theatrical presence before the arrival of the two new Hindi films.
With the Hollywood blockbuster already commanding screens and audience attention, ‘Awarapan 2’ and ‘Batwara 1947’ will have to carve out their own space through their respective strengths – nostalgia and music on one side and star power, emotion and historical drama on the other. The Independence Day weekend therefore sets up an intriguing three-way box-office battle.
