Markets Espresso: Independence Day, tricolour and the stock market

Hello Espresso Lovers! Heartiest greetings on India’s 80th Independence Day and for your contributions in ensuring that our flag continues to fly at the heights of glory. Today is also the 10th edition of Espresso and over the last two-and-a-half months, the love, appreciation and feedback received is truly humbling. We cannot be more grateful!

Speaking of Freedom and Independence, the market needs some of it as well. In 2024, the Nifty was at 24,200 during the Independence Day celebration. That figure in 2025 was 24,600, and this year, it is just above 24,300. The market needs freedom from this range, this uncertainty, this volatility. But for that to happen, all three colours of our Tirangaa need to come together in their own symbolic ways.

The Saffron in our flag stands for “Strength, Courage and Sacrifice.” It has been the strength and courage of our domestic investors, particularly the retail lot, that has managed to keep the market’s head above water amidst this relentless exodus of FPI capital over the last few years. How? SIPs. Even as flows into equity funds may fluctuate monthly, the SIP flows have remained consistent, month after month, at or near record high levels. This Strength and Courage needs to continue!

The White stands for “Peace, Truth and Purity.” The world needs peace. The wars need to stop. Peace will put to rest at least one uncertainty that always keeps the market on tenterhooks. Even if India is not involved in the war, the markets are impacted due to the second-order effects, whether it be the rise in crude oil prices or others.

Truth and Purity needs to emerge in governance aspects. It is distressing to see big corporations. ones that should lead by example, face governance issues and the subsequent punishment meted out to the stock, destroying plenty of hard-earned investor wealth. Investors like it when companies are transparent. Transparent about issues, transparent about the road ahead and even transparent about their own plans. They reward the transparent ones disproportionately too. It is extremely hard to regain Indian trust once it’s lost for whatever reason.

Lastly, Green – The symbol of “Fertility, Growth and Prosperity of the Land.” A combination of Saffron and White coming together will translate into Green in the market context. Investor-friendly policies, proper corporate governance, encouraging equity participation for those who are still not part of it, overcoming uncertainties and less regulatory uncertainty are the only ways in which the market will go back to the blue-sky territory that it has not managed to do so over the last three years!

Our tricolour has different colours. All have different meanings. The same needs to be for your portfolio as well. Diversification is extremely important, as many of our market experts also suggest! That is also a message to not put all your eggs in one basket. Largecaps have predominantly done nothing over the last three years, but select mid and smallcap stocks are at record highs. Proper asset allocation, research, and patience will ensure that your portfolio turns into a multi-bagger that you always aspired for it to be.

We all need a Brigadier Suryadev Singh in our lives. The market needs one today more than ever. Not just for the timely advice and self-confidence in himself, but to go and remove the fuse conductors of every headwind and uncertainty possible and give this market a breakout that it so desperately needs. As goes his most iconic life principle – “Pehle Mulakaat, Phir Baat, Aur Phir Zaroorat Pade, to Laat!”

Results season has come to an end, and contrary to expectations of it being a dull and drab one, there have been more hits than misses this time around. The market should take heart from that! We’ll keep hunting for triggers over the next 45 days before the next results season arrives, and trust me, there are enough and more to keep investors hooked to their screens!

As Naseeruddin Shah says in the landmark A Wednesday (2007), while describing people travelling in Mumbai’s local trains, “Ek dusre ko naam se nahi jaante the, sirf hello se jaante the!” That defines us Indians. May not know who the person sitting next to you is, but will share stock tips with them during a market conversation, may be struggling to stand on our own feet, but will ensure the others find theirs, starve but feed the hungry stranger, sharing the other person’s joy and stand together during adversity! That is what has kept us strong over the last eight decades. Yes, there is cynicism, there are problems, there will be adversities, but we’ve fought every single one of it before, and we’ll fight them with all our might in the future as well. We shall overcome!

Here’s wishing you all a very happy Independence Day. Glory to our motherland and may the market also find the freedom that it seeks at the earliest! We’ll be back next week with all the latest brew. Until then, do like, subscribe and follow us on our social media handles. Jai Hind!
