An NRI cannot open a fresh PPF account. However, an account opened while the person was a resident Indian can continue until its original maturity, subject to the applicable rules.
India Post also states that NRIs are not eligible to open National Small Savings Scheme accounts.
What happens to an existing PPF account?
If a PPF holder becomes an NRI during the 15-year tenure, the existing account can continue until its original maturity.
Sharad Chand, Business Head – Wealth Management, Alankit Limited, an Indian fintech and e-governance service provider, said the account can continue during this period, with contributions subject to the PPF’s ₹1.5 lakh annual limit.
The important restriction comes at maturity. An NRI cannot extend the account for another five-year block. The regular PPF extension facility otherwise allows accounts to be extended in five-year blocks.
This means an NRI with an existing PPF account should keep the original maturity date in mind while planning long-term investments.
What about PPF interest?
The treatment of NRI PPF accounts has seen regulatory changes, so older explanations can be misleading.
In 2024, India Post issued specific instructions for certain existing PPF accounts held by Indian citizens who became NRIs. The order said such accounts would receive Post Office Savings Account interest up to September 30, 2024, after which they would earn zero interest.
Therefore, investors should check the status and applicable rules for their particular account rather than assume that the normal PPF rate will continue throughout the NRI period.
What if the person becomes a foreign citizen?
Becoming an NRI and becoming a foreign citizen are two different situations.
If an account holder acquires foreign citizenship, the PPF account is subject to separate rules. Chand said the account holder must inform the bank or post office about the change in nationality and complete the required closure formalities.
The distinction is important because NRI status does not by itself mean Indian citizenship has ended. Acquiring foreign nationality is a separate legal event and can trigger different treatment of the PPF account.
For anyone moving overseas, the key steps are therefore to update the account’s residential and citizenship status with the bank or post office and check the applicable interest and maturity rules.
In short, an existing PPF account does not simply become a normal PPF account forever after the holder moves abroad. The original maturity date, NRI status and any subsequent change in citizenship can all affect how the account is treated.
