Roger Federer is all set to return to the US Open this time for not one, but two blockbuster matches, as confirmed by the organisers. The Swiss tennis legend, who won five of his 20 career Grand Slams at the Flushing Meadows in New York, will be back in the city four years after he hung up his racquet .
US Open confirmed Federer’s return on Sunday, and he will be joined by longtime rival and 2003 champion in New York, Andy Roddick, alongside fellow tennis legends and former champions Andre Agassi and John McEnroe. “An icon is returning to New York! Federer will be joined by 2003 US Open champion and longtime rival Andy Roddick, as well as fellow tennis legends and US Open champions Andre Agassi and John McEnroe,” the post on X read.
It will be a one-evening affair, with Federer set to play two matches. He will be up against Roddick in a one-set showdown. The two had, in fact, played a US Open final in 2006, with the 45-year-old winning in four sets. It was one of their only two US Open meetings in a rivalry comprising 24 meetings, the other being in the 2007 quarters, in which the Swiss had one as well, in three sets.
Federer will also be teaming up with McEnroe to take on Roddick and Agassi in a one-off doubles battle.
Federer has five US Open titles to his name, which is the joint-most in the Open Era alongside Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors. He won those titles consecutively between 2004 and 2008, before the streak ended in 2009, when he lost to Juan Martín del Potro in five sets in the 2009 final. Federer never won the US Open again, reaching the final just once more, against Novak Djokovic in 2015.

Federer’s return to New York will be one of the main attractions during the Fan Week.
