The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released the official bank holiday schedule for September 2026. According to the list, public and private sector banks across the country, including State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, will observe closures on specific dates depending on regional festivals, weekend schedules, and local observances.
In addition to state-specific holidays, all branch locations will remain closed nationwide on the second Saturday (September 12) and fourth Saturday (September 26), alongside regular Sunday closures.
RBI bank holiday list for September 2026
- September 4 (Friday): Banks closed in various cities, including Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, and Vijayawada, for Janmashtami (Vaishnava) / Krishna Jayanthi.
- September 12 (Saturday): Banks closed in Guwahati for the Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva, alongside the nationwide second Saturday closure.
- September 14 (Monday): Banks closed in Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, and Vijayawada for Ganesh Chaturthi / Ganesh Puja / Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata / Hartalika.
- September 15 (Tuesday): Banks closed in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, and Panaji for Samvatsari (Chaturthi Paksha) / Nuakhai / Ganesh Chaturthi (2nd Day).
- September 21 (Monday): Banks closed in Guwahati, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram for the Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva / Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi.
- September 22 (Tuesday): Banks closed in Ranchi for Karma Puja.
- September 23 (Wednesday): Banks closed in Jammu and Srinagar for the Birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji.
- September 25 (Friday): Banks closed in Gangtok for Indrajatra.
The holiday schedule for banks is set in line with the Negotiable Instruments Act and state-specific government notifications. Although branch counters will not operate on these days, online banking, mobile apps, UPI payments and ATMs will remain available. Customers may therefore wish to arrange any branch-related work in advance, based on the schedule applicable in their state.
