The shares, representing about 2.4% of Welspun Corp’s equity, were sold at an average price of ₹2,275.30 apiece, according to NSE data.
The transaction came a day after CNBC-TV18 reported, citing sources, that Welspun Investments and Commercials and Mathur were looking to sell about 63 lakh shares at an offer price of ₹2,250 apiece.
The actual transaction price was about 1.1% above the indicated offer price.
Capital Group entities pick up bulk of shares
Three Capital Group entities emerged as major buyers in the transaction, collectively acquiring 42.3 lakh shares, equivalent to about 1.64% of Welspun Corp’s equity.
Euro Pacific Growth Fund was the biggest buyer, acquiring 29.5 lakh shares, or about 1.12% of the company, for ₹670.3 crore.
New World Fund purchased 8.4 lakh shares, representing a 0.32% stake, for ₹191.51 crore, while Capital Group Europacific Growth Trust acquired another 4.4 lakh shares, or about 0.2% equity, for ₹100.9 crore.
Together, the three funds bought shares worth about ₹963 crore. Buyers of the remaining roughly 20.7 lakh shares sold in the transaction were not identified in the data available so far.The deal was a secondary share sale, meaning the proceeds will go to Welspun Investments and Commercials and Mathur rather than to Welspun Corp.
Secondary share sales surge in 2026
The Welspun transaction adds to a sharp rise in secondary share sales in the Indian market this year.
Founders, promoters and private-equity investors have sold shares worth ₹3.63 lakh crore through 9,616 block and bulk deals so far in 2026, according to Prime Database.
With four months of the year still remaining, secondary share sales are on course to cross ₹4 lakh crore. Domestic mutual funds and insurers have helped absorb some of the supply at a time when foreign portfolio investors have remained cautious on Indian equities.
Welspun Corp shares ended Wednesday at ₹2,310.50 on the NSE, down 1.49% from the previous close.
