A 23-year-old software engineer died and her boyfriend was injured after a fall

BENGALURU: A 23-year-old software engineer died while her 30-year-old lover sustained serious injuries after the two allegedly jumped from the seventh-floor terrace of a co-living paying guest accommodation in Whitefield on Sunday afternoon.The deceased, identified as Janani, worked as a software engineer with a financial services company in Pattanduru Agrahara near Whitefield. The injured man was identified as Manikya Velu.Based on the preliminary investigation, police said Janani had rented a room at the PG only on Saturday and had been staying there with Velu.A senior officer said Velu and Janani, both natives of Puducherry, had been in a relationship for the past six years.Recently, Velu allegedly got engaged to another woman, leading to disputes between the two. They reportedly had frequent quarrels over the issue.The couple quarrelled again on Sunday morning before going to the terrace. Police suspect Janani decided to end her life by jumping from the building. It is alleged that she pulled Velu along with her as she jumped, causing both to fall around 12.15pm.Janani died at the spot, while Velu sustained serious injuries. He is undergoing treatment at Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Whitefield and is reportedly out of danger.“Once Velu is in a condition to give his statement, we will question him and know further details about their extreme step,” a senior officer said.Janani had earlier been staying at another PG in the same area. “We suspect that they both lived in the same room,” the officer added.Velu works for a logistics company in Puducherry. A case of unnatural death report (UDR) has been registered at Whitefield police station based on a complaint filed by Janani’s aunt. The investigation is underway.
