OpenClaw has rolled out OpenClaw 2.0, marking the most extensive software upgrade in the open-source artificial intelligence (AI) agent platform’s history since its debut last year. Announcing the release, the development team playfully referenced Rockstar Games’ upcoming November title launch with the social post, “HA! We beat GTA 6!” According to the company, the version 2.0 overhaul prioritises user accessibility, significantly cutting down initial installation friction while adding multi-user collaboration tools and deeper cross-platform automation.“Today we released by far the largest update in the history of OpenClaw. It was built by 933 contributors, including 569 first-time contributors, and is composed of over 16,000 pull requests,” the company said, adding, “This update touches every part of OpenClaw, including installation, messaging, memory, skills, models, automations, the browser and native apps, plugins, security, and a very long tail of fixes.”
Streamlined setup and automatic tool detection
According to the company, OpenClaw 2.0 simplifies initial onboarding by removing cumbersome manual configurations. For example, rather than requiring complex upfront setup, the software automatically discovers existing AI credentials and local frameworks on a device, including API keys, Claude, ChatGPT, Codex logins, and local runners like LM Studio and Ollama.Additionally, users can start interacting with their personal AI agent immediately, finishing secondary configuration settings through conversational prompts. Desktop deployment across Linux, Windows, and macOS has been streamlined, while mobile apps on iOS and Android now feature a simplified permissions and device pairing flow.“Before this update, we had shipped 106 releases in 230 days, most within a day or two of the one before them, so going nearly seven weeks without shipping was not normal for us. The release cadence slowed, but development moved in the opposite direction because our team was growing, and the increased volume and pace of work outgrew both the foundation of OpenClaw and the process we used to ship it, so we reworked both at the same time,” the company added.
Redesigned browser interface and navigation tools
The primary browser portal has been completely overhauled into a centralised productivity workspace. The new web dashboard launches straight into active dialogues with the user’s AI agent, consolidating approvals, files, system preferences, and chat threads into one unified view. The new navigation features include pinned chat threads, structured session grouping, unified system search, and real-time Markdown rendering.Version 2.0 also expands the platform’s real-world agentic workflow capabilities allowing users to configure autonomous routines that monitor incoming emails, flag urgent communications, and forward push alerts directly through messaging apps like Telegram. The assistant can also pull information across disparate channels, such as locating a retail invoice in an inbox and automatically replying with the requested info over iMessage.
