Dating app scam in Bengaluru? Man shares shocking experience with a match

A Bengaluru man’s post about an unusual dating app experience has sparked discussion online. He said a meeting he had planned after days of chatting took an unexpected turn, leaving him with questions about the people he had interacted with. His account has drawn mixed reactions, with some users criticizing his decision to go along with the situation and others saying his experience could serve as a warning to people using dating platforms.

How the conversation began

The man said he matched with a woman named Shelly on a dating app. They spoke for several days but could not meet earlier because he was busy with work. After getting some free time, he decided to meet her.“So I found Shelly on a dating app. We went on to talk for days. I couldn’t meet her due to a hectic office. But we were talking in between. Now today, I was free from the office, so I planned to meet her,” the man wrote. Before the meeting, however, he said Shelly asked him to collect a package from another person.

According to the man, Shelly directed him to a person named Ron and asked him to make an online payment for the package. She allegedly told him that she would return the money in cash. The man said he found the request unusual but accepted her explanation.“I did get weird but did not say much as she said her mother has a business and she has more cash than money online,” the man said.He then travelled to the location given to him.

What happened at the location

The man said Ron told him that the package was being prepared and asked him to make the payment while he waited. He said he initially refused and asked Ron to finish the process first, but eventually made the payment.“I got there to Ron’s location; this guy says he is packing it, and meanwhile you can pay. I got sceptical at first and asked him to come first. But in the end I did pay.”Throughout the exchange, he said he remained in contact with Shelly.

Another request followed

The man said Shelly later asked him to buy cigarettes because she had forgotten to place an order. After completing the errand, he returned. He then claimed that neither Shelly nor Ron could be reached.

His suspicion about the two

With both people no longer responding, the man said he believed they may have been coordinating with each other.“Now after this, both of them are not reachable. Both stopped replying. Meaning they were both in contact while doing this and carefully planned to fool people and steal their money,” the man said. This remains the man’s allegation based on his experience.

What users said

Several users responded to his post. One defended him for sharing the incident despite the criticism he received.“People here are making fun of you, but good on you for sharing; even if it helps one person, that is something,” said one user.Another user spoke about ignoring personal doubts in such situations.“Sorry to hear that this happened to you. Sometimes when we don’t pay heed to our internal spider sense – we ignore it. That’s just us being humans. There is nothing wrong with that.”One commenter also claimed to have spoken to Shelly on Bumble about a month earlier.“I was talking to her on Bumble as well a month ago. seemed pretty chill, but I got busy and ghosted her. That seems like a really good thing I did now.”The claim was made by the commenter and was not independently verified.Disclaimer: The information in this article is based on the details shared in the social media post and reactions to it.
