Taapsee Pannu has opened up about the kind of films she wants to be associated with as the industry goes through changing phases. The actor, known for choosing performance-driven roles, said she would rather step away from acting than take up projects that do not align with her sensibilities. While promoting her upcoming film ‘Gandhari’, Taapsee Pannu spoke about the contrast between the theatrical landscape she entered and the kind of films dominating the big screen today. She did not name any particular titles. However, she pointed to the increasing presence of violence and shock value in recent releases.
Taapsee Pannu recalls the cinema of 2015
During an interaction with Suchin Mehrotra, Taapsee Pannu was asked about the drastic difference between the films that arrived in theatres around 2015 and the current scenario. She responded, “Was that a dream era? Someone like me wouldn’t have a career if this was the time where only this kind of stuff was getting made. I am too privileged, I think, looking back. That I had the liberty to start at that point. A few days back, I had a conversation with my family back home, and I was looking at some of the films releasing over the last couple of months. I was like, ‘Retire hone ka time toh nahi aa gaya hai kahi (Is it time for me to retire)?’ because I will prefer retiring than doing those kinds of films, because I am sure the films can have their audience.”
Taapsee Pannu does not want to follow every trend
Taapsee Pannu acknowledged that films built around violence and shock value can have their own audience. However, she made it clear that she does not necessarily want to be part of that trend. Taapsee Pannu also explained that her love for acting does not mean she will accept every project. She believes an actor’s filmography remains important long after a particular cinematic trend disappears. She added, “I love my job, but I don’t love my job blindly to be doing those kinds of films, and I firmly believe there is a filmography. Times will change, but the filmography will not change. Ten years later, the genre will change, but my films will stay. If someone checks what she had done, I don’t want it to be embarrassing to me or anyone attached to me. So I will probably hold my filmography closer to me than the times.”
‘Gandhari’ follows a mother’s fight
Taapsee Pannu is currently gearing up for the release of ‘Gandhari’. The film is directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon. Set in the fictional town of Joypurra, the story follows a visually impaired mother caught in a dangerous situation. Her journey takes her through hidden truths, escalating threats and unexpected alliances.The film explores her determination to find her way through circumstances where hope constantly faces darkness. With ‘Gandhari’, Taapsee Pannu is once again backing a story led by a strong female character. The film is scheduled to premiere on September 3.
