RBI announces redemption price for SGB 2019-20 Series X ahead of September 11 maturity

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the redemption price for the premature redemption of the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2019-20 Series X, due on September 11, 2026. The SGB 2019-20 Series X was issued on March 11, 2020.

The RBI stated that, as per the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption of a Gold Bond may be permitted after the fifth year from the date of issue, on the date on which interest is payable. Accordingly, the next due date of premature redemption for this tranche falls on September 11.

The central bank has stated that the redemption price of an SGB is based on the simple average of the closing price of gold of 999 purity for the previous three business days from the date of redemption, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA).

Based on this method, the RBI fixed the redemption price for the premature redemption due on September 11 at ₹15,328 per unit of SGB.
