US Markets | Stocks dropped Thursday after US oil prices topped $100 a barrel, amid growing fears of higher inflation from a prolonged war in the Middle East. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 258 points, or 0.5%. The S&P 500 fell 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite slid 0.4%.
Crude Oil | Oil prices jumped 4% on Thursday, with benchmark Brent crude hitting $105 a barrel after the biggest spike in attacks on shipping since the Iran war began, spurring trader concerns about supply disruptions. Brent crude futures were up $4.05, or 4%, at $105.26 a barrel by 1215 GMT. US oil topped $100 a barrel for the first time since May as West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose $3.99, or 4.15%, to $100.04.
US Jobless Claims | The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week, suggesting layoffs remain low even as employers continue to take a cautious approach to hiring. Initial claims fell to 206,000 from a revised 207,000 a week earlier, according to data released by the US Labour Department on Thursday. The four-week moving average also edged down to 206,000. Weekly claims have generally stayed between 200,000 and 230,000 over the past year, keeping them low by historical standards.
US Treasury Yields | Yields on US government bonds rose to fresh multiyear highs as oil prices extended their surge, prompting traders to add to bets that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates as soon as next week. Treasury yields rose by five to 10 basis points across maturities, with the 30-year bond reaching levels last seen in 2007 and the two-year note exceeding 4.5% for the first time since 2024. Traders boosted expectations for a Fed rate hike next week to about 70% and fully priced in a move by October instead of December.
US-Iran War | The Iran-backed Houthi rebel group on Thursday took over Yemen’s port city of Mokha, an area vital to controlling shipping through the Red Sea, Houthi and Yemeni officials say. Mokha, is about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a strategic waterway between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden through which about 12% of the world’s oil and other goods are shipped.
ECB Interest Rates | The European Central Bank (ECB) raised all three of its key interest rates by 25 basis points on Thursday, September 10, as the conflict in West Asia continues to fuel inflation pressures and cloud the economic outlook. The ECB raised the deposit facility rate to 2.50%, the main refinancing rate to 2.65% and the marginal lending facility rate to 2.90%, with the new rates taking effect from September 16, 2026.
HDFC Bank | Private lender HDFC Bank Ltd said the Bahrain Court has rejected claims in all seven proceedings initiated by investors in Credit Suisse Additional Tier 1 (CS AT1) Bonds against the bank, after examining their allegations and the evidence placed before it. The bank said it received favourable orders from the High Civil Court, Bahrain, in two proceedings on September 9, 2026. The court had rejected five other similar matters involving CS AT1 investors between July and August.
Bank Strike | Banking services like cash withdrawals and deposits at public sector banks will be impacted on Friday as unions have decided to go on strike to press for five-day banking and other pending demands. With the strike, banking services, especially in public sector banks, will be impacted for four days in many parts of the country. September 11 is a Friday, and the subsequent two days are bank holidays. September 14 is a holiday in some states for Ganesh Chaturthi.
Tata Trusts Board Meet | Tata Sons has received a three-month extension from the Registrar of Companies (ROC) to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM), taking the deadline to December, sources told CNBC-TV18. The extension was sought after the company’s 108th AGM was adjourned on August 18 for want of quorum. It was the first such adjournment in Tata Sons’ history, sources said. The Tata Trusts are scheduled to meet on September 11, while the Tata Sons board is scheduled to meet on September 17.
US CPI | US Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August is due at 6:00 p.m. IST on Friday, with the report closely watched ahead of the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy meeting. In July, US CPI rose 0.1% month-on-month after falling 0.4% in June, while inflation eased to 3.4% year-on-year from 3.5% in June.
