Zac Efron has been looking for a space to build a unique and sustainable version of his home, which he found in the bushlands of New South Wales. The property, located an hour from Byron Bay and spanning 311 acres, is supposed to be made entirely of hemp and other biodegradable materials found in nature. The actor, who rose to popularity for his leading role in ‘High School Musical,’ has invested significant time, energy, and money into his passion project to build his own off-grid, eco-friendly dream home.

Zac Efron bought the barren bushlands in 2020

Australian Financial Review reported that the 38-year-old star purchased the large piece of land in New South Wales six years ago. He had invested in the bushlands to create his dream project; however, getting it off the ground took some time. Now, he is working on creating his ‘FutureCave’ with the help of the innovative Dutch-Australian designer Joost Bakker.Using internal bricks and joinery, Efron and Bakker are planning on making the entire home out of hemp. The product is stated to be sourced from a farm that is located somewhere in southern New South Wales. Not only the building itself, but a lot of the items within the home itself will be made with the use of hemp, one way or the other, including mattresses, curtains, pillows, and other similar items. The remainder of the home is also going to be made using similar natural items. According to another report shared online by Realtor.com, the project will use constructed hemp blocks, recycled oyster shells, agricultural waste, and sustainable particle boards. Efron is going all out with Bakker in planning this home, seeing as the land had been sitting there barren since he first purchased it for an undisclosed amount in 2020.

Joost Bakker is quite excited to work on Zac Efron’s home

In November last year, Bakker had taken to his Instagram and posted about how Zac Efron had asked him to work on the home and how big of an honour it all was for him. He had shared a photo of the two and wrote in the caption: “For the past year we’ve experimented with making hemp blocks, replacing concrete with two materials that restore the environment: hemp, possibly the best plant on earth at repairing and restoring soil health, and, of course, oysters, nature’s ultimate ocean restorer. We are using the most cutting-edge technology (invented by the Romans 2000+ years ago). I want to create a building material that I hope will become mainstream one day—a material that naturally breathes, is anti-mould, is naturally fire-resistant, and improves the indoor air Zac will ultimately breathe. Big thank you to the Rennie family in Hillston, NSW, who have supported this project with their hemp (and ideas!). We are getting close now, @agrico_hillston. Also, shout-out to @shuckdontchuck. I’ll keep you posted on how these blocks turn out.”Since then, he has been regularly sharing updates on his account about the project and working with Efron. In May, earlier this year, he shared that he is about to start work on his home. He wrote, “Excited to get started on Zac’s house! Especially want to thank these two legends, @main__frank, for working so hard to get this project designed and approved!”His latest update came in July, when he shared a photo with the actor, possibly in his factory or working studio, as everyone was seen wearing safety goggles and orange jackets. He wrote, “Grant Shelton from @forest1au has worked in this factory for 35 years, gaining an immeasurable amount of knowledge and skills. Turning the by-product from the sawmill on site into particle board. He and his team have used this experience to turn a crop that takes 3-4 months to harvest from a seed into an exceptional quality particle board.” He also mentioned that hemp has a lot of abilities to rejuvenate the soil and that they are excited for this project to take off.

More details about Zac Efron’s home

The outlet further shared that Efron’s home will have something called six “bedroom pods.” All of the structures are going to be connected by an outdoor walkway and will also boast their own personal bathroom area, along with a rooftop garden. Efron is also planning on building a large living area on the property as well.Efron also sat down for an interview with the outlet, talking about how and why he wanted to create something like this. He shared, “I live a pretty fast-paced life and work quite a bit, so in between movies and press tours, my number one goal is always to take time for myself and rest and recharge and to be in nature as much as possible and as close to the earth as I can, and this land just feels like it’s perfect for that.”In 2021, Efron also put his famous LA home on the market and has been planning on fully shifting to Australia.
