Rani Mukerji and Aditya Chopra have managed to keep one of Bollywood’s most high-profile weddings away from the public eye for over a decade. The actor and filmmaker, who had kept their relationship largely private, surprised everyone when they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Italy on April 21, 2014.Yash Raj Films confirmed the wedding at the time with a brief statement: “We are happy to announce that Mr. Aditya Chopra and Ms. Rani Mukherji got married last night on 21st April in Italy. The wedding was a very small intimate affair with very close family and friends,”Among the many details that have emerged about the closely guarded wedding, Rani’s bridal outfit remains a talking point. She became the first official Sabyasachi bride, with designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee recently recalling how little time he had to create her wedding lehenga.“When she did a secret wedding with 15 people, I think only 13 people were allowed, and Adi was chasing drones,” Sabyasachi said, as Rani, who was standing beside him, burst into laughter. The designer had earlier revealed that the actor gave him just one week to prepare the outfit.Rani has shared a special bond with Sabyasachi over the years, with the designer making several exceptions for her. She remains the only Indian actor for whom he continues to create custom outfits. Explaining the reason behind the association, Sabyasachi once said, “I don’t do custom for Bollywood. But I did a custom sari for her. Because I don’t think Rani is Bollywood. She’s family,” in an Instagram Reel shared by Diet Sabya.Interestingly, Sabyasachi’s most recent styling contribution to a Bollywood film was also for Rani, when he worked on Varun V Sharma’s 2021 crime comedy ‘Bunty Aur Babli 2’.The guest list at Rani and Aditya’s wedding was reportedly extremely small, with filmmaker Karan Johar among those invited. Johar shares a long professional association with Aditya, having worked as his assistant on his directorial debut ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ in 1995. He later directed Rani in his own debut film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, followed by ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ and ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’.Given the importance of secrecy surrounding the wedding, Aditya had even warned Johar about the consequences of any information getting out. “If the wedding information leaks, it will only be because of you. Because others don’t know anyone else, and you’re the only access to the outside world. Remember, if any trickle of information leaks, it will be your fault,” Chopra told Johar at the time.Years later, Johar recalled just how stressful the period had been for him. “I will never forget how stressed I was because 2 States was releasing, and everyone thought I was being insensitive to the film by leaving on the release day,” he said during a conversation with Rani at Yash Raj Studios earlier this year. Johar also revealed that he had gone as far as hiding the wedding from his mother, Hiroo Yash Johar.More than 12 years after the wedding, Rani and Aditya have still not made their wedding photographs public. The couple welcomed their daughter Adira in 2015. Rani had, however, acknowledged last year that releasing the pictures on their 25th wedding anniversary could be “very good idea”. The actor remains doubtful that her husband would agree.“My husband is a very private person and he wanted the wedding to be very private,” Rani told ANI.
