The US military has deployed two additional Patriot missile batteries to Saudi Arabia and Qatar, strengthening protection around key oil and gas facilities as Washington prepares for the possibility of renewed major military operations against Iran.According to Axios, citing two US officials and one regional source, the deployments come after Saudi and Qatari leaders raised concerns that Iran could retaliate against their energy infrastructure if the US resumes large scale attacks on Tehran. One Patriot battery was sent to Saudi Arabia to protect a key oil facility, while another was deployed to Qatar to protect a natural gas facility, Axios reported. The move highlights the risk to Gulf energy infrastructure if the US Iran conflict escalates again. In early August, when US President Donald Trump was considering a major attack that included strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Qatar reportedly lobbied him against the plan, fearing Iranian retaliation against their oil and natural gas facilities, according to Axios.Any major attack on oil or gas infrastructure in the region could disrupt energy supplies and put further pressure on global markets, particularly if the conflict affects shipping through key regional waterways. The additional Patriot deployments also come as the US faces growing pressure on its missile defence stocks. Patriot batteries, and particularly their interceptors, have become increasingly sought after since the Iran war began.According to the analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated that US Patriot interceptor inventories had fallen below 1,000 following extensive use during the Iran conflict. The Pentagon is meanwhile expanding its military presence in the Middle East, with additional warships, fighter aircraft and troops being sent to the region. The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, carrying thousands of US Marines, has also been deployed to the region, adding to Washington’s growing military presence in the Middle East.About Patriot air defence systemThe Patriot air and missile defence system is a ground based system operated by the US and allied militaries to protect troops and critical infrastructure from aerial threats. The US Army says Patriot can defend against aircraft, cruise missiles and tactical ballistic missiles, with its fire unit built around a radar, engagement control station and launchers. The latest PAC 3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) interceptor uses hit to kill technology, destroying incoming threats through direct impact. It is powered by a two pulse solid rocket motor that gives it greater range, altitude and manoeuvrability than earlier PAC 3 versions.A Patriot fire unit typically includes a multifunction radar, engagement control station and launchers. Depending on configuration, a launcher can carry up to 12 PAC 3 MSE interceptors.
