FIIs sell ₹6,121 crore as market snaps 2-day gaining streak


Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers of ₹6,121.37 crore in Indian equities on Wednesday on a provisional basis, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought ₹4,596.57 crore, according to exchange data.

FIIs bought equities worth ₹12,577.96 crore and sold ₹18,699.33 crore, resulting in net selling of ₹6,121.37 crore. DIIs bought ₹18,707.03 crore and sold ₹14,110.46 crore, resulting in net buying of ₹4,596.57 crore.

FII selling increased from ₹2,961.30 crore on Tuesday and ₹4,699.14 crore on Monday. DII buying, meanwhile, moderated from ₹5,088.92 crore on Tuesday, after domestic institutions bought ₹5,181.62 crore on Monday.

The market snapped its two-day gaining streak on Wednesday, with the Nifty falling 173 points to close at 22,603 and the Sensex declining 429 points to 72,639. The RBI’s 25 bps rate hike and cautious commentary weighed on market sentiment.

The Nifty Bank slipped 73 points to 55,056 but relatively outperformed on rate hike benefits. The Midcap index fell 379 points to 59,383.

The rupee weakened against the dollar and slipped to a five-month low of 96.78/$.

Rate-sensitive sectors such as realty and auto fell, with sectoral indices declining up to 2%. NBFCs and small finance stocks slipped post rate hike, with AU SFB and Chola Investment among the top losers.

Titan was the top Nifty loser after the company reported Q2 jewellery business growth lower than estimates. Metal stocks remained weak as the dollar index rose, with Hindalco and JSW among the top losers.

Higher crude kept paint and airline stocks under pressure, with Asian Paints down 2%.

Kotak Mahindra Bank continued to see buying and ended as the top Nifty gainer, rising 2%. Capital market names also closed higher, with BSE and Angel gaining 2% each.

Kalyan Jewellers closed 4% higher after reporting its Q2 update, while housing finance stocks and PSU banks surged post rate hike, with Bank of Maharashtra and LIC Housing among the top gainers.

Market breadth favoured declines, with 41 Nifty stocks closing in the red and stocks falling up to 4%. The advance-decline ratio stood at 2:3.
