Tata Power partners Norway’s Ocean Sun to test floating solar technology in India

Tata Power said on Wednesday that it has partnered with Norway-based renewable energy technology company Ocean Sun to test its membrane-based floating solar technology in India.

Under the collaboration, the companies will undertake a nearly 300 kWp floating solar pilot at Tata Power’s Mulshi reservoir in Maharashtra.

The pilot will assess the technology’s performance, reliability, cost competitiveness and scalability under Indian conditions. It will also compare the technology with conventional floating solar systems on energy generation, capacity utilisation, installation time and method, operations and maintenance requirements, capital costs and overall commercial viability.

How Ocean Sun’s floating solar technology works

Unlike conventional floating solar systems, which typically use interconnected pontoon structures to keep solar panels afloat, Ocean Sun’s technology mounts solar photovoltaic (PV) modules on a thin, hydro-elastic membrane that floats directly on the water surface.

The pilot is expected to provide operating insights that could help assess the technology’s potential for wider deployment in India.

According to Tata Power, estimates by the National Institute of Solar Energy put India’s floating solar potential at more than 102 GWp.

“At Tata Power, innovation is central to accelerating India’s clean energy transition. Our collaboration with Ocean Sun reflects our commitment to bringing advanced global technologies to India and evaluating their potential in real-world conditions,” Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power, said.

“Through this floating solar pilot, we aim to generate valuable operating insights and assess its potential to deliver reliable, scalable and cost-effective clean power solutions,” he added.

The collaboration agreement was signed on the sidelines of the second India–EFTA Prosperity Summit, which brought together stakeholders from India and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries.

Shares of Tata Power Company Ltd closed at ₹344.80 on October 7, down 1.95% from the previous close.
