RBL Bank to open 1,000 branches in 2-3 years as lender seeks to deepen retail deposit push: MD R Subramaniakumar

RBL Bank plans to open 1,000 branches over the next two to three years as it sharpens its focus on granular retail deposits and expands its secured retail franchise, Managing Director and CEO R Subramaniakumar said during a post-earnings interaction, according to an Informist report.

The private lender said it would continue to grow its business across wholesale banking and secured retail segments while selectively reducing higher-cost liabilities.

The bank has already lowered rates on term and savings deposits over recent quarters and will take further decisions on deposit pricing based on liquidity and credit deployment needs, the report said.

Subramaniakumar said the bank plans to open 20-25 branches in the current quarter, part of its broader expansion strategy aimed at strengthening customer relationships and boosting deposit mobilisation.

The lender also expects its net interest margin (NIM) to moderate gradually as the full impact of foreign currency non-resident (bank) deposits mobilised under the Reserve Bank of India’s special FCNR(B) window begins to reflect in earnings.

The report added that RBL Bank has mobilised around ₹34,000 crore of FCNR(B) deposits, while its loan book received about ₹10,000 crore of leverage from the programme. The management said the liquidity raised through the scheme will be deployed over time, particularly in wholesale banking and secured retail lending.

Despite the expected margin pressure, the bank remains optimistic on asset quality.

“We are encouraged with the asset quality trends and we expect slippages to trend materially downwards,” Subramaniakumar said, as quoted by Informist.

RBL Bank’s standalone net profit more than doubled year-on-year to nearly ₹482 crore in the September quarter, supported by a 23% rise in interest income.

Management said business conditions remain stable across key lending segments and excess liquidity on the balance sheet is expected to support growth in the coming quarters.

RBL Bank’s share price closed at ₹417.70 on the NSE (down 0.07% or ₹0.30 from the previous close of ₹418.00) as of October 12, 2026. The lender’s stock has surged more than 32% so far this year.
