US Markets | US stocks traded mixed on Tuesday as investors assessed earnings reports from major banks, while a sharp overnight decline in South Korea weighed on memory stocks. The S&P 500 slipped 0.1%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 359 points, or 0.7%.
Crude oil | Oil retreated after three days of gains as traders took stock of the latest attacks — and efforts to ease tensions — from the Middle East to Russia and Ukraine. Brent crude fell below $105 a barrel after rising more than 6% since Thursday. Traders have been closely monitoring developments in the Middle East on concern a recent barrage of attacks by Iran-backed Houthi militants on Saudi Arabia could imperil shipments from the region’s largest oil exporter.
US Home Sales | Sales of previously occupied US homes rose in September from the previous month, but slowed compared to a year ago, the latest sign the housing market remains stalled as rising mortgage rates and home prices discourage prospective homebuyers. Existing home sales rose 1.5% last month from August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.99 million units, the National Association of Realtors said Tuesday. One of the factors in the monthly increase is that sales in August were revised lower.
US-Iran war | Houthi-linked media Al-Masirah said Tuesday the Saudi-led coalition has carried out airstrikes against oil facilities west of Sanaa. It did not provide any evidence. The report came shortly after a warning from the Saudi-led coalition spokesman calling on residents in the area to evacuate for their safety. Witnesses in the city said they heard explosions in Sanaa. It was not immediately clear what was hit.
