US stock market today: Dow slips as earnings, oil volatility cloud market mood

US stocks traded lower on Tuesday (October 13) as investors assessed earnings reports from major banks, while a sharp overnight decline in South Korea weighed on memory stocks.

The S&P 500 fell 0.1%, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 207 points, or 0.4%, giving up an earlier gain.

Energy markets added to the cautious mood. Oil prices retreated after Brent crude briefly climbed above $105 a barrel, while US gasoline prices remained elevated, matching the 2022 record for the longest stretch above $4 a gallon in a calendar year.

The combination of uneven corporate earnings, pressure on chipmakers, and volatile commodity markets kept investors on edge, limiting risk appetite across Wall Street.
