Stock Market Crash: Key factors behind the steep Sensex-Nifty sell-off on Oct 21

Indian equity markets wiped out over ₹8 lakh crore in investor wealth on Wednesday, October 21, as a sharp intraday reversal dragged the benchmark indices lower. The sell-off came after the markets had opened higher, with the Sensex falling more than 1,300 points from its intraday high and the Nifty slipping nearly 2% from its peak before recovering some losses.

At the close, the Sensex fell 143 points to 73,710, while the Nifty 50 declined 78 points to 22,811. The broader market remained under pressure, with the Nifty Midcap index falling nearly 2% and the Smallcap index declining around 2.4%.

Here are the key factors that may have contributed to Wednesday’s market decline:

Higher crude oil prices

Brent crude prices climbed above $110 a barrel on Wednesday, renewing concerns over India’s oil import bill and the potential impact of elevated energy costs on inflation and corporate profitability. India is a major crude oil importer, making domestic markets sensitive to sustained increases in oil prices.

Rising bond yields

Higher bond yields remained another concern for investors. Rising yields can make bonds more attractive relative to equities and increase borrowing costs. However, the specific claim that India’s 10-year government bond yield touched 7.43%, its highest level since 2023, should be retained only after verifying the relevant market data for Wednesday.

Sharp reversal after an early rally

The benchmark indices opened higher and climbed nearly 1% before reversing sharply during the session. The Sensex fell more than 1,300 points from its intraday high, while the Nifty dropped nearly 2% from its peak. The reversal suggests that selling intensified after the early gains, although the move alone does not establish a single cause.

Stock-specific earnings pressure

Company-specific developments added to the weakness in several stocks. Bajaj Finance fell over 3% amid concerns about its margin outlook. ABB India declined 6% following ABB PLC’s results, while SRF dropped 5% after a weak set of results, with most segments missing estimates. Vishal Mega Mart fell nearly 5% after reporting lower same-store sales growth.

Auto stocks also declined around 2–3% as investors reacted to October vehicle registration data. These moves added to the pressure across sectors and the broader market.

What next for the market?

Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities identified the 22,670–22,690 zone as a crucial support for the Nifty, with resistance at 22,980–23,000. A break below the support zone could expose the index to the next support at 22,500–22,520.
