The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has clarified how long members continue to earn interest on their Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) savings after retirement, depending on their age when they retire.
In a post on X, EPFO said members who retire before the age of 55 continue to earn interest on their EPF balance until they turn 58. Their accounts become inoperative after that.

For members who retire at the age of 55 or later, the EPF account continues to earn interest for three years after retirement, after which it becomes inoperative, according to EPFO.
The clarification is relevant for employees who have stopped receiving fresh EPF contributions after retirement but have not withdrawn their accumulated provident fund savings.
What happens when an EPF account becomes inoperative?
An inoperative EPF account stops earning interest under the applicable rules. However, the account becoming inoperative does not mean the accumulated balance is forfeited.
The government had earlier clarified that interest is not credited once an account becomes inoperative under the EPF Scheme, 1952.
Members who have joined another EPF-covered establishment should check whether their previous provident fund balance has been transferred to their current account. Retired members can check their balance and applicable withdrawal options through EPFO.
