FIIs pull out ₹2,697 crore this week; DIIs pump in nearly ₹11,000 crore

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers of Indian equities this week, offloading shares worth ₹2,697.37 crore across the four trading sessions. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), however, continued to support the market, recording net purchases of ₹10,942.19 crore over the same period.

The selling by foreign investors came as Indian equity markets reversed the previous week’s gains, with the Nifty falling over 2%. The broader market saw steeper losses, with the midcap index declining 6% and the smallcap index falling 7%. BSE-listed companies lost over ₹20 lakh crore in market capitalisation during the week.

FIIs were net sellers on Monday, October 19, and Thursday, October 22, but recorded net buying on Wednesday, October 21, and Friday, October 23. On Friday, foreign investors bought equities worth ₹887.65 crore on a net basis, following net sales of ₹3,458.70 crore on Thursday. FIIs had recorded net purchases of ₹1,022.32 crore on Wednesday, after selling ₹1,148.64 crore on Monday.

Date FII DII

22 Oct -3,458.70 2,891.32

Despite sustained domestic institutional buying, market breadth remained weak. Only six Nifty stocks ended the week in positive territory, while 20 declined 4% or more. Across the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices, only six of the 100 stocks were in the green.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Trent, Nestle India, Shriram Finance and Adani Enterprises were among the top Nifty losers. Swiggy, KEI Industries, Sammaan Capital, Nippon Life India Asset Management and Inox Wind were among the top midcap losers.
