Nifty Outlook: The Nifty 50 faces a crucial test at the 22,500-22,400 support zone amid rising crude oil prices, persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) selling and heightened market volatility, according to Jay Thakkar, Head of Derivatives and Quant Research, Vice President. Thakkar believes a decisive break below this support zone could extend the ongoing correction, while a sustained move above 23,000 could improve the technical outlook.
Thakkar said global financial markets remained under pressure as geopolitical uncertainty resurfaced and crude oil prices climbed. Brent crude moved towards USD 114 per barrel following renewed supply concerns after Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Higher crude oil prices have revived concerns over inflation, energy supplies and the future direction of interest rates, weakening expectations of a near-term recovery in equities.
Nifty Outlook: What are the key support and resistance levels?
According to Thakkar, the Indian equity market has come under renewed selling pressure after failing to sustain the recovery witnessed earlier in October.
The Nifty has retreated from its recent swing high near 23,175 as crude oil prices climbed and foreign investors continued to reduce their exposure to Indian equities.
The weakness has also spread to the broader market, with midcap and smallcap stocks witnessing considerable selling pressure.
Thakkar identified 22,500-22,400 as the immediate support zone for Nifty, followed by 22,200 and the recent low near 22,180.
On the upside, 22,800-22,900 is the first important resistance zone, while 23,000 remains a major psychological hurdle.
A sustained move above 23,000 could improve the technical outlook and raise the possibility of a recovery towards 23,150-23,300.
However, a decisive break below the immediate support zone could extend the correction.
Can Nifty witness a short-covering rally?
Thakkar noted that the recovery witnessed in the previous week had raised expectations of a short-covering rally after an extended period of weakness.
However, the subsequent decline suggests that the market has not developed sufficient strength for a sustained reversal.
From a derivatives perspective, the 22,500 strike remains important because of significant put positioning, while the 23,000 strike represents a major hurdle due to substantial call positioning.
According to Thakkar, a recovery accompanied by improving market breadth and declining volatility would be more constructive than a rally driven purely by short-covering.
He expects the market to remain volatile, with the possibility of sharp intraday recoveries but limited confidence in a sustained uptrend until major resistance levels are reclaimed.
Crude oil prices: Why is Brent at USD 114 a concern?
Thakkar identified crude oil as the most important external variable for Indian equities.
Brent crude’s rise towards USD 114 per barrel has renewed concerns over inflation, the rupee, India’s current account deficit and corporate profitability.
He noted that aviation, paints, tyres, chemicals, logistics and selected consumer-facing businesses could face margin pressure if elevated crude oil prices persist.
Upstream oil producers, meanwhile, could benefit from higher realisations, depending on operating costs, taxation and domestic policy conditions.
According to Thakkar, a sustained moderation in Brent towards USD 100 per barrel would provide meaningful relief to Indian equities.
However, a further rise above USD 115-120 could increase the risk of earnings downgrades and foreign capital outflows.
FII selling and rupee weakness: What lies ahead?
Thakkar said persistent foreign institutional selling continues to weigh on Indian equities, although domestic institutional investors have provided an important cushion.
Higher crude oil prices could add pressure by increasing India’s external financing requirements.
He noted that further rupee weakness could make foreign investors more cautious, as currency depreciation can reduce dollar-denominated returns.
According to Thakkar, an improvement in FII activity, accompanied by stabilisation in the rupee and crude oil prices, would provide stronger confirmation of a market recovery.
Bank Nifty Outlook: Key levels to watch
Thakkar identified the 53,500-54,000 zone as an important support area for Bank Nifty.
A decisive break below this zone could invite further selling pressure.
On the upside, 55,300-55,400 remains an important resistance area. A sustained breakout above this zone could improve the prospects of a recovery.
India VIX: What does rising volatility indicate?
According to Thakkar, India VIX moved to around 17, reflecting continued market uncertainty.
He said a decline in VIX alongside a recovery in Nifty would be constructive, particularly if market breadth also improves.
However, a rise in VIX accompanied by a decisive break below 22,400 could indicate that the correction may deepen.
Thakkar noted that volatility should not be assessed in isolation, as the combination of price action, market breadth and VIX provides a more reliable signal.
Sectoral Outlook: Which sectors could face pressure?
Thakkar expects sectoral performance to remain selective amid elevated crude oil prices, interest-rate uncertainty and changing demand conditions.
Banking and financial services: Recent weakness in select private-sector lenders suggests that stock-specific earnings concerns could continue to influence the sector.
Information technology: IT stocks could offer relative resilience if the rupee remains weak and companies deliver encouraging results. Thakkar noted that TCS attracted buying interest despite broader market weakness.
Oil and gas: Upstream producers could benefit from higher crude realisations, while downstream companies face risks depending on their ability to pass on input costs.
Aviation, paints, tyres and chemicals: These sectors remain vulnerable to prolonged increases in crude oil and related input costs.
Consumer and discretionary stocks: Higher fuel and transportation costs could weaken purchasing power and increase operating expenses.
Nifty Outlook Next Week: What should investors expect?
Thakkar expects market volatility to continue amid elevated crude oil prices, foreign institutional selling, weakening market breadth and earnings-related uncertainty.
He believes domestic institutional buying, resilience in selected stocks and a meaningful correction in crude oil could support market sentiment.
According to him, 22,400 remains the immediate level Nifty needs to defend, while the 22,800-23,000 zone must be reclaimed to improve the outlook.
A break below support would strengthen the bearish structure, whereas a recovery above resistance could trigger short-covering.
Thakkar said crude oil, foreign institutional flows and Nifty’s ability to defend its support levels remain the three important variables to monitor.
Expert Stock Recommendations: Oberoi Realty, Dr Reddy’s and Indian Hotels
Thakkar also shared three stock recommendations for the November futures series.
Oberoi Realty: Sell recommendation
Action: Sell November futures
Entry range: Rs 1,590-1,610
Stop loss: Above Rs 1,656
According to Thakkar, Oberoi Realty has broken its critical support of Rs 1,600, accompanied by an increase in open interest in the futures segment, indicating short build-up.
The stock has been forming lower highs and lower lows. He noted that selling pressure increased after initial profit-booking following the rise in repo rates.
Options data also shows higher call additions than put additions. The stock is trading below its maximum pain level of Rs 1,660, which Thakkar identified as a critical resistance.
He expects the short-term bias to remain negative until this level is crossed.
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories: Buy recommendation
Action: Buy November futures
Entry range: Rs 1,220-1,240
Stop loss: Below Rs 1,184
Targets: Rs 1,305 and Rs 1,340
Thakkar said Dr Reddy’s Laboratories has demonstrated resilience by outperforming the broader market decline and its peers.
Options activity has also remained positive, with put additions exceeding call additions, indicating support at lower levels.
Although the stock is trading below its maximum pain level of Rs 1,250, put additions at the 1,250 strike increase the possibility of this level being crossed, according to Thakkar.
Indian Hotels: Buy recommendation
Action: Buy November futures
According to Thakkar, Indian Hotels has delivered good results, with positive price action following its earnings announcement.
Options data indicates significant put additions at lower levels, which could provide support.
The 800 strike has the highest call base, and a move above this level could lead to further upside.
Thakkar also noted that the stock is trading well above its maximum pain level of Rs 760, which could provide support at lower levels.
