Life Certificate: Who needs to submit it, why it matters and how to apply from home

Pensioners can submit their annual Life Certificate without travelling to a bank branch or pension office, thanks to a doorstep service offered by India Post Payments Bank (IPPB). The facility allows eligible pensioners to generate a Digital Life Certificate (DLC), also known as Jeevan Pramaan Patra, from home with the help of postal workers.

In a post on X, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) mentioned the service, encouraging pensioners to contact IPPB to arrange a doorstep visit. The facility is available to both IPPB and non-IPPB customers, provided their pension-disbursing agency supports the digital certificate service.

What is a Digital Life Certificate?

Jeevan Pramaan Patra is a digital certificate that serves as proof that a pensioner is alive and remains eligible to receive pension payments. It uses Aadhaar-based biometric authentication to complete the verification process electronically.

The facility is available to eligible pensioners receiving pensions through participating central and state government departments, EPFO and other pension-disbursing agencies.

Who needs to submit a Life Certificate?

Pensioners who are required to provide annual proof of life to their pension-disbursing authority need to submit a Life Certificate to help ensure their pension continues without interruption.

For 2026, super senior citizens aged 80 and above can submit their annual certificate from October 1, while other eligible central government pensioners can do so from November 1. The deadline for both groups is November 30.

EPFO pensioners under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) do not follow the same annual submission deadline as other pensioners. Their Digital Life Certificate remains valid for 12 months from the date it is submitted.

Failing to submit the required certificate within the applicable period can result in pension payments being temporarily withheld until verification is completed.

How to submit a Life Certificate from home

Eligible pensioners can use IPPB’s doorstep service to complete the process without visiting a branch. Here are the steps:

Contact the post office: Call the IPPB doorstep service helpline on 033-22029000 or contact the nearest post office to request a visit.

Arrange a home visit: A postman or Grameen Dak Sevak can visit the pensioner to help complete the process.

Complete biometric verification: Provide the required pension details and complete Aadhaar-based biometric authentication.

Receive the Pramaan ID: Once the Digital Life Certificate is successfully generated, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) sends the Pramaan ID to the pensioner.

Download the certificate: Pensioners can download the certificate from the Jeevan Pramaan portal at https://jeevanpramaan.gov.in/ppouser/login.

What is the fee for the doorstep service?

A fee of ₹70, inclusive of GST and cess, applies for each successful Digital Life Certificate generation. No additional doorstep charges are levied on IPPB or non-IPPB customers for issuing the certificate.

Before booking a visit, pensioners should confirm that their pension-disbursing agency supports the service. The list of participating authorities and agencies is available on the official Jeevan Pramaan website.
