JioBlackRock recommends 5-10% global allocation, launches first GIFT City equity fund

JioBlackRock Asset Management has launched its first international fund from GIFT City, offering Indian investors access to global equities through the JioBlackRock Advantage World Equity Fund. The open-ended fund of funds will invest in the BlackRock Advantage World Equity Fund, which has an over eight-year track record.

Sid Swaminathan, MD & CEO of JioBlackRock Asset Management, said the fund is designed for investors who have already built a domestic portfolio and are now seeking international diversification. He added that investors should start with a 5-10% allocation to global equities while keeping India as the core of their portfolios.

Swaminathan said the fund aims to provide diversified exposure to developed markets through a data-driven investment strategy. “This kind of fund is not something for everyone,” he said. “If you’re just getting started, your best call is to start investing domestically in local mutual funds through an SIP.” He added that once investors build a sizeable portfolio, this is a really interesting way to diversify.

The fund has a minimum initial investment of $5,000, with subsequent investments starting at $1,000 and no exit load. Explaining the higher investment threshold, Swaminathan said it reflects both operational requirements and the target investor base. “This is not designed for the initial first-time investor,” he said, adding that investors with established portfolios can consider global exposure as a diversification tool.

Swaminathan recommended a gradual approach. A starting point is 5-10% of the portfolio, he said, noting that such an allocation can improve the portfolio’s risk-return profile. Over time, investors may increase exposure to around 20% as they become more familiar with international markets.

He also cautioned investors against chasing recent global market performance. “Time is your friend. Timing is not always your friend,” Swaminathan said. Instead of investing based on short-term trends, he advised investors to build diversified international exposure gradually and remain disciplined over the long term.
