NTPC Q2 Results

NTPC Ltd, India’s largest power generation company, on Saturday reported a sharp rise in profit for the September quarter of FY27 and announced its first interim dividend of the financial year. Consolidated net profit climbed 38.7 per cent year-on-year to Rs 7,030 crore, compared with Rs 5,067 crore in the same quarter a year earlier. The board also approved a dividend of Rs 3 per share, with the record date set for November 6, 2026.

Revenue for the quarter rose 21.2 per cent to Rs 54,270 crore, up from Rs 44,784 crore in the corresponding period last year. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, or EBITDA, increased 22 per cent to Rs 15,627 crore from Rs 12,814 crore.

The EBITDA margin improved marginally to 28.8 per cent from 28.6 per cent a year ago. The slim gain suggests that the company’s profit growth came mainly from higher volumes and revenue rather than a major shift in operating efficiency.

Profit Growth Outpaces Revenue

The standout feature of the results is that net profit grew far faster than revenue. While revenue rose a little over 21 per cent, profit expanded by nearly 39 per cent. That gap indicates that costs below the operating line, such as depreciation, finance costs and tax, grew more slowly than income, which lifted the bottom line. The company has not detailed the drivers in the filing summary, so a fuller picture will depend on the segment-wise commentary and management remarks that typically follow.

EBITDA growth of 22 per cent, broadly in line with revenue growth, shows that core operations kept pace with the increase in sales. For a power utility, that steadiness matters, since fuel costs and plant availability are the main swing factors in quarterly earnings.

First Interim Dividend of Rs 3 Per Share

Alongside the results, NTPC’s board approved the first interim dividend for 2026-27. The payout is Rs 3 per equity share of face value Rs 10, which works out to 30 per cent of the face value. The company has fixed November 6, 2026, as the record date. Shareholders whose names appear in the company’s records on that date will be eligible for the dividend.

For investors, the dividend adds to the appeal of a stock that is often held for its steady income profile. NTPC is a majority government-owned company and has a long record of returning cash to shareholders, which makes the interim payout a closely watched part of each earnings season.

NTPC is the backbone of India’s thermal power supply and has been steadily expanding into renewable energy and green hydrogen. Its quarterly numbers are therefore read as a barometer for the wider power sector. A strong set of figures suggests healthy demand for electricity, stable plant operations and effective cost management.

The results come at a time when power demand across the country has remained robust, and when energy security and the transition towards cleaner sources are high on the policy agenda. Investors will now look to management commentary on capacity additions, the renewable pipeline, fuel availability and capital expenditure plans for the rest of the fiscal year.

What Investors Should Watch

With the record date for the dividend only days away, attention will turn to how the stock responds when markets reopen. Analysts will also assess whether the improvement in margin, though small, can be sustained, and how much of the profit jump was due to one-time or non-operating items. Those details are usually clarified in the detailed financial statements and the post-results analyst call.

For now, the headline picture is positive: higher revenue, stronger profit, a modest margin gain and a cash payout for shareholders. NTPC has started the second half of the fiscal year on a firm footing.
