UPI payments at Dubai Duty Free: What Indian travellers need to know

Indian travellers shopping at Dubai Duty Free can now pay for eligible purchases through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), with the facility also offering a 10% discount, subject to a maximum of AED 100.

The initiative was announced by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), on November 5.

The arrangement will allow travellers to make payments at participating Dubai Duty Free terminals directly from their eligible Indian bank accounts.

To use the facility, travellers need to activate the UPI International or UPI Global service for an eligible bank account through their UPI-enabled application. Once activated, they can use UPI at participating merchants that accept the payment method.

Under the arrangement, Network International will act as the acquiring partner, enabling UPI acceptance across participating payment terminals at Dubai Duty Free. The retailer operates at Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport.

NIPL said Indian travellers can avail a 10% discount on eligible purchases made through UPI, subject to a maximum discount of AED 100. The offer is part of the initiative to expand UPI acceptance at overseas retail locations.

The facility gives Indian travellers another payment option while shopping in Dubai, allowing them to use their UPI-enabled applications rather than relying entirely on cash or foreign currency.

Travellers should check the detailed terms and conditions of the offer, including eligibility and applicable restrictions, before making a purchase.
