What should senior citizens check before investing in FDs?

Senior citizens should compare interest rates across different banks and tenures before booking an FD. A higher rate may be available only for a specific deposit period, so investors should check whether the tenure matches their financial needs.

They should also check the premature withdrawal rules, penalty charges and interest payout options. Banks may offer monthly, quarterly or cumulative payout facilities, depending on the deposit scheme.

Interest earned on FDs is taxable according to the depositor’s applicable income tax slab. Senior citizens should factor in the tax impact while comparing returns. They should also check the applicable deposit insurance cover: DICGC insures eligible deposits up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and interest, subject to its rules.
