The revisions cover how transactions are counted, applicable charges, and daily withdrawal limits on select debit cards.
HDFC Bank said it will begin counting UPI-based cash withdrawals at ATMs as part of the monthly free transaction limit. Until now, such withdrawals were treated separately. With the change, customers using cardless cash withdrawal via UPI will see these transactions included within their permitted free ATM usage.
Once customers exceed the free transaction threshold, the bank will levy a charge of ₹23 per transaction, plus applicable taxes. The existing structure allows five free withdrawals per month at HDFC Bank ATMs, while transactions at other bank ATMs are capped at three free withdrawals in metro cities and five in non-metro locations.
The bank said the move aims to standardise fee structures across different withdrawal channels and improve transparency in how charges are applied.
UPI-enabled ATM withdrawals allow users to withdraw cash without a debit card by scanning a QR code at compatible machines and authorising the transaction through a UPI application. The facility has expanded across banks as part of broader efforts to integrate digital payments with cash access.
Separately, Punjab National Bank has announced a revision in ATM withdrawal limits for select debit cards, also effective April 1. The bank indicated that daily withdrawal limits will be reduced for certain card categories, though specific thresholds are yet to be detailed.
Customers should check whether their debit cards are affected and plan withdrawals accordingly. Banks have also encouraged the use of digital payment options such as UPI and net banking for higher-value transactions.
