ICICI Bank introduces biometric authentication for UPI transactions on iMobile

ICICI Bank Q4 preview: steady growth, strong asset quality seen; margins likely to stay stable

ICICI Bank has introduced biometric authentication for Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions on its mobile banking application, iMobile, allowing users to authorise payments of up to ₹5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition instead of a UPI PIN.

With this feature, users can approve peer-to-peer transfers, QR code-based merchant payments, and online transactions through device-level biometric verification. Transactions above ₹5,000 will continue to require the existing UPI PIN.

The bank said the option is designed to improve both convenience and security by reducing manual input and lowering risks such as PIN exposure in public spaces. Users will also retain the choice between biometric and PIN-based authentication.

The feature is available on updated versions of the iMobile app, with Android users able to use fingerprint authentication and iOS users able to use facial recognition.

The development comes as banks expand stronger authentication mechanisms in digital payments, in line with a broader regulatory emphasis by the Reserve Bank of India on enhancing security and user safety in the digital payments ecosystem.
