The Sensex rose 356 points to 77,269, while the Nifty gained 122 points to close at 24,119. The Nifty Bank index underperformed, adding just 15 points to end at 54,879. The midcap index outperformed broader benchmarks, rising 375 points to 60,160.
Market breadth remained favourable, with the NSE advance-decline ratio at 2:1.

Among sectoral trends, Nifty IT was the top losing sectoral index, with Coforge falling nearly 4%. Kotak Mahindra Bank declined over 3% after its Q4 results, weighing on the banking index. Indus Towers also fell by over 2%, while Avenue Supermarts dropped 5% following its quarterly earnings. Sun TV slipped 5% as DMK trailed in Tamil Nadu assembly poll trends.
On the gainers’ side, Adani Ports rose over 5% after strong Q4 results and was the top Nifty gainer. Godrej Properties gained over 3% after reporting a 70% jump in Q4 net profit. Eicher Motors advanced over 3% after reporting a 31% year-on-year rise in total April Royal Enfield sales. BHEL jumped 8% following strong Q4 results.
Vodafone Idea rose nearly 3% after the government cut its AGR dues by 27%.

In the banking and financial space, Kotak Mahindra Bank was the top drag, while Bharti Airtel emerged as the top Nifty loser, falling over 3% during the session.
On the index contribution front, Reliance Industries, Larsen & Toubro, HDFC Bank, Adani Ports and Hindustan Unilever were among the top contributors to the Nifty.
In the midcap space, Poonawalla Fin, Colgate, Bandhan Bank and Godrej Properties were among the top gainers.
