EV protection in summer: How maintenance practices and insurance add-ons support battery safety


As temperatures rise across India, electric vehicle (EV) owners must adjust charging, parking and maintenance practices to help protect battery health and maintain consistent vehicle performance during peak summer conditions.

Insights shared by Policybazaar highlight that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can accelerate battery wear, particularly in high-usage urban conditions.

Heat, charging behaviour and battery care

Maintaining optimal battery levels is advised during hot weather, with extended periods at 100% charge linked to faster long-term degradation under high ambient temperatures, according to the guidance.

Parking in shaded or covered areas is also recommended to reduce direct heat exposure. While EVs are equipped with thermal management systems, limiting heat stress is noted to support battery efficiency and cooling performance.

Repeated fast charging during peak afternoon heat is another practice advised against, as high-speed charging under elevated temperatures can increase thermal load on battery systems,Policybazaar said.

Basic maintenance checks are also highlighted. Heat-related tyre pressure fluctuations can impact safety and efficiency, while battery cooling or thermal management alerts are advised to be acted upon promptly to avoid system strain.

Insurance protection and EV-specific risks

Alongside usage practices, EV-specific insurance protection is being highlighted as a key consideration due to risks such as thermal stress, battery damage and charging equipment failure.

Inputs shared on CNBC TV18 note that lithium-ion batteries exposed to extreme heat are more vulnerable to degradation and require specialised protection beyond standard motor insurance coverage.

Mayur Kacholiya, Head – Motor Product at Go Digit General Insurance, stated that EV-focused add-ons such as EV Shield cover are designed to protect high-value components including batteries, electric motors, chargers and charging cables, along with EV-specific roadside assistance for battery or charging-related breakdowns.

Add-on covers for EV protection

Insurance structures are expanding to address both electrical and operational risks associated with EV ownership.

EV Shield-type covers extend protection to core components such as batteries and charging systems, while consumable covers address minor replacement items used during repairs. Zero depreciation covers ensure claim settlement without factoring in depreciation, which is significant given the high cost of EV parts.

In cases of total loss due to fire, theft or severe damage, return-to-invoice covers provide reimbursement of the full invoice value, including taxes and registration.

Additional add-ons such as roadside assistance, daily conveyance benefits, tyre protection, key replacement cover and personal belongings protection are also being positioned within EV insurance frameworks. Usage-based models like pay-as-you-drive are also emerging to align premiums with usage patterns.
