Tata bets on hatchback revival with new Tiago, expands affordable EV push


Tata Motors PV is making a fresh pitch for India’s hatchback market at a time when SUVs dominate consumer attention. The automaker on Thursday launched the next-generation Tata Tiago and Tiago.ev, betting on sharper styling, premium features and aggressive pricing to revive excitement in a segment it believes has been “neglected” by the industry.

The petrol Tiago starts at ₹4.69 lakh, while the CNG range tops out at ₹7.99 lakh. The Tiago.ev starts at ₹6.99 lakh, with Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) pricing bringing the entry cost down to ₹4.69 lakh plus battery subscription charges.

The move comes at a time when hatchbacks have steadily ceded market share to SUVs, but Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles MD & CEO Shailesh Chandra believes part of that shift happened because hatchbacks failed to evolve.

“Hatchbacks were getting neglected while SUVs kept getting all the modern tech,” Chandra told CNBC-TV18, adding that some buyers may have shifted to SUVs because hatchbacks lacked “aspiration.” He said the idea behind the new Tiago was to “bring aspiration back” into a segment that often acts as the first gateway to personal mobility.

The facelifted Tiago gets a more upright design, refreshed interiors, dual screens, wireless smartphone connectivity, and segment-first features such as a 360-degree surround camera and blind view monitor, alongside petrol, iCNG and EV powertrain choices. Tata says the Tiago line-up is aimed at democratising premium features typically associated with higher segments.

Chandra argued that despite India’s SUV obsession, the hatchback story is far from over.

“The SUV shift is real, but hatchbacks can still grow if they keep getting updated,” he said, adding that India’s passenger vehicle market could expand from 4.7 million units to 6.5 million units over the next five years, leaving room for hatchbacks to grow even if they retain a 20% market share.

Tata is also using the Tiago launch to strengthen its affordable EV proposition, a segment where it sees demand accelerating rather than slowing.

“It’s not slowing down, EV demand is exploding,” Chandra said, claiming Tata’s EV bookings have risen 2x to 2.5x amid fuel price uncertainty following geopolitical tensions. He expects strong growth particularly in the sub-₹12 lakh EV segment, which accounts for a large share of India’s passenger vehicle market.

The company is positioning the Tiago.ev as a practical and economical alternative to petrol cars, highlighting running costs of roughly ₹2.3–2.4 per km under the BaaS model, versus about ₹10 per km for petrol vehicles. Tata claims EV owners could recover the cost differential in four to five years through fuel savings.
