CPM general secretary MA Baby has written to EC expressing “grave concern” over large-scale deletion of voters from Bengal poll rolls. In his letter to CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Baby said, “SIR represents a systematic exercise in mass disenfranchisement, marked by arbitrary criteria such as ‘logical consistency’ and increasing reliance on algorithm-driven exclusions. AJUP nominee files papers in Kaliganj Bengal SIR appellate tribunal restored the name of AJUP’s Kaliganj constituency candidate, Kechhabuddin Sekh, enabling him to file nomination on Thursday, the last date for filing papers. Sekh has reportedly become the third contestant to have his name restored. FIR against TMC’s Nandigram nominee TMC’s Nandigram nominee Pabitra Kar was booked for alleged assault, intimidation and loot – first such case against any candidate since MCC came into effect in Bengal. Buddhadeb Giri said Kar and three others pressured him to chant “Joy Bangla” and assaulted him when he refused. He said Rs 3,700 and a watch were taken. Cong files FIR against Assam candidate Congress’ Assam unit filed an FIR against its Udalguri seat candidate, Suren Daimary, who resigned from the party on the eve of assembly polls, accusing it of working “only for ‘Miyas’ (a pejorative term used for Bangladeshi Muslims), but not doing anything for the ST community”.
