Months after her glamorous turn in Netflix India’s The Royals, Bhumi Pednekar is back to doing what she does best — play a rooted, gritty woman. Prime Video India and Abundantia Entertainment unveiled the trailer of their new crime thriller show Daldal on Wednesday. The series stars Bhumi as Mumbai’s top cop, up against an elusive and dangerous serial killer as well as the ghosts of her own traumatic past.
What’s in the trailer?
Daldal starts with Bhumi’s character, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rita Ferreira sitting at a Mumbai café with Geeta Agarwal’s character. The latter reads out of a suggestive poem written on a crumpled paper by a man sitting at an adjacent table. Rita can’t help but conjure up the violent thought of pushing that paper down the man’s throat, as he looks at her with a crass expression.
The next thing we know, that very man is found dead under a bridge next to the sea. The cause of death? Chicken being shoved down his throat, much to Rita’s deja-vu horror. We then glimpses of the suspected serial killer Sajid, played by Aditya Rawal, who’s suspected to be “at the intersection of drug addiction and crime” and “can kill anyone for merely Rs 50 to Rs 500”.
We’re also introduced to Samara Tijori’s character Anita Acharya, a rookie reporter, who’s at odds with Rita. When the DCP asks her, “Who do you think murdered him?,” Anita just smiles slyly and responds, “This is your job, ma’am.” As Anita continues to probe Rita, who claims she can’t discuss “sensitive” information, Anita reminds her it’s also the journalist’s job to ask questions.
We also see Rita become too personally invested in the case, taking law into her own hands by even slapping a suspect in police custody and slamming the car door on another. “There’s a reason Rita madam was interested in the case, sir,” claims her colleague. Lata Mangeshkar’s gem “Gumnaam Hai Koi” from Manoj Kumar and Nanda-starrer 1965 thriller Gumnaam plays in the background, adding another layer of intrigue and foreboding to the proceedings.
More about Daldal
The official synopsis of Daldal states: “Rita Ferreira, the newly appointed DCP of the Mumbai Crime Branch, wears her crown like a curse. Introverted and plagued by impostor syndrome, Rita is shaken by the brutal murder of – an innocent good Samaritan whose death eerily mirrors a violent thought Rita had about him, just hours earlier. Wracked with guilt, Rita is drawn to the case and, against all odds, takes it upon herself to find the killer while battling resistance from her colleagues, a deeply patriarchal system, and her unravelling personal life.”
“The investigation pits her against Anita Acharya, a rookie reporter, whose dual existence is a scary contrast. But their true conflict isn’t with each other – it’s with the ghosts of their pasts. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game between two women forged in trauma, set against the gritty backdrop of Mumbai and its crime branch. Only one will emerge redeemed,” adds the synopsis.
