The Cleveland Browns are looking for a new starting quarterback. The team has started 42 different quarterbacks since the year 1999. USA Today reports that coach Todd Monken wants answers very soon.
He wants a clear depth chart before the summer practice starts. Monken spoke to reporters at the NFL owners meetings this Tuesday.
The coach needs to balance practice reps for his top players. “You’d love to be able to come out of the spring with a depth chart,” Monken said.
The team needs to find a leader within the next few months. Everyone is waiting to see who will take the first snap.
This decision will define the future of the entire football franchise.
Deshaun Watson returns to health for the upcoming NFL season
Deshaun Watson is finally healthy after a very long leg injury. He missed all of 2025 due to a torn Achilles tendon.
Owner Jimmy Haslam says Watson now has a great fresh start. “Deshaun has a great chance to do that now,” Haslam said.
The owner praised the new coach for helping his veteran quarterback. Haslam previously called the Watson trade a big swing-and-miss last year.
Now he believes Watson can find success with this new staff.
The veteran quarterback is fighting to keep his spot on the team.
He must prove he can still play at a very high level. The fans are divided on whether Watson should lead the offense.
Shedeur Sanders competes for the starting job in Cleveland
Sanders finished last year as the team’s primary starting quarterback.
He won the final two games for the Cleveland Browns last season. Sanders recently changed his jersey number back to number two this week.
Monken said it is too early to evaluate the young player. “It’s refreshing to see a player that recognizes where he’s at,” Monken said.
Sanders went 3-4 as a starter for the team last year. Cleveland currently owns two first-round picks in the next NFL draft.
They might draft another quarterback if these players do not work.
The competition for the starting job will be very intense this spring. Dillon Gabriel also remains in the mix for the starting position.
