Luka Doncic injury return: When will Lakers star come back? New Grade 2 hamstring strain update

Luka Donic injury update: The Los Angeles Lakers’ late-season momentum has taken a serious hit, with Luka Doncic ruled out indefinitely following a left hamstring injury. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the star guard will, at minimum, miss the remainder of the regular season after undergoing an MRI on Friday. He has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 hamstring strain

With just five games left, the timing could not be worse. The Lakers currently sit at 50-27, holding the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference as they prepare for the postseason.

Luka Doncic’s agent issues statement

Bill Duffy of WME Basketball, as per Shams Charania, said: “This season, Luka Doncic has performed at a historic level, leading the league in scoring, carrying the Lakers to third place in the Western Conference and placing himself in the middle of one of the most tightly contested MVP races in memory.”

“To ensure that Luka’s incredible accomplishments this season are rightly honored and he can be considered for the league’s end-of-season awards, we intend to apply for an “Extraordinary Circumstances Challenge” to the 65-game rule. Luka missed two games this season for the birth of his second child in Slovenia. His daughter was born on Dec. 4 on another continent, and yet he was back in the United States competing with his team on Dec. 6. Luka has gone to great lengths to show up for his team and this league this season. His record-breaking season deserves to be noted in the history books, despite last night’s unfortunate injury and other extraordinary circumstances. We look forward to working with the NBAPA and the league office to ensure a fair outcome in this matter.”

How the injury happened

Doncic’s injury unfolded during Thursday night’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. With just over seven minutes left in the third quarter, he pulled up near the free-throw line while facing a double team and immediately grabbed his left hamstring.

He remained on the floor briefly before exiting the game, raising immediate concern among teammates and coaching staff.

Earlier setback revealed by JJ Redick

After the game, head coach JJ Redick provided further insight into the situation, revealing that the issue began much earlier.

Doncic had reportedly tweaked the same hamstring in the first quarter but was evaluated and cleared to continue, even returning for the second half before the injury worsened.

This isn’t the first time the injury has surfaced. Doncic had already missed four games earlier this season due to a left hamstring issue, suggesting a recurring concern.

What it means for his return timeline

While the team has not confirmed an exact timeline, being ruled out indefinitely signals a cautious approach, especially with the playoffs approaching. A Grade 2 hamstring strain typically requires multiple weeks of recovery, putting Doncic’s postseason availability into question.
