According to a Government Resolution (GR) issued by the Home Department, the incentive has been introduced to compensate for the risks associated with anti-narcotics operations and to attract experienced and capable officers to the specialised force.
The allowance will be paid at 30% of the employee’s basic pay, but no additional allowances will be calculated on this amount. The benefit will also end once an officer or personnel is transferred back to their parent cadre or unit.
The government said ANTF personnel routinely conduct covert operations, raids and investigations against drug trafficking networks, including international and organised crime syndicates, exposing them to significant operational risks.
The GR also noted that officers handling narcotic substances face the possibility of serious physical and psychological harm because of the hazardous nature of the assignment.
The decision follows an announcement by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly earlier this week. He had said the government would introduce special incentives for ANTF personnel to ensure the force attracts skilled officers.
Fadnavis had pointed out that similar incentives are already available to personnel posted in sensitive assignments such as the Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).He also acknowledged that, in the past, narcotics units often received officers who were not considered for other postings, adding that combating the growing drug menace requires some of the state’s best officers. The government is also examining additional measures, including a special pay component or a one-step promotion policy for ANTF personnel, he had said.
