How to link pan with aadhaar online before filing your ITR

mAadhaar app discontinued: What Aadhaar users need to know about UIDAI’s new app

A PAN card is one of the most important financial documents for taxpayers in India. It is required for filing Income Tax Returns and is also used for many banking and financial activities. If you received your PAN card on or before July 1, 2017, you must link it with your Aadhaar card.

This process helps the Income Tax Department confirm taxpayer details, prevent the use of multiple PAN cards by the same person and improve the accuracy of financial records. While people applying for a new PAN usually have their Aadhaar-linked automatically during the application process, existing PAN holders need to complete the linking separately.

The I-T Department allows both registered and unregistered users to link their PAN and Aadhaar through its official portal. The process is simple and can be completed online in just a few steps. Before using this service, make sure you have a valid PAN, your Aadhaar number and a valid mobile number.

Here is a step-by-step guide to help you do it.

The PAN Aadhaar linking process has two simple steps. First, you need to pay the required fee through the Income Tax e-filing portal. After the payment is verified, you can submit your request to link your Aadhaar with your PAN.

To pay the linking fee, visit the Income Tax portal and click on Link Aadhaar under the Quick Links section. If you are logged in, you can also find the option in the Profile section. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, then click Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.

Next, enter your PAN again, confirm it and provide any mobile number to receive an OTP. After verifying the OTP, you will be taken to the e-Pay Tax page. Select the correct tax year or financial year, choose the payment type and then select Fee for delay in Linking PAN with Aadhaar. The payable amount of ₹1000 will already be filled in. Complete the payment using your preferred payment method. Once the payment is successful, you can submit your linking request through the portal.

After your payment is successful, log in to the Income Tax e-Filing portal. On the dashboard, go to the Profile section and click Link Aadhaar under the Link Aadhaar to PAN option. You can also find the same option in the Personal Details section. Enter your Aadhaar number and click Validate to submit your linking request.

If you are not logged in, visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal and click Link Aadhaar under the Quick Links section. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, then click Validate. Fill the required details and select Link Aadhaar.

In the following steps, enter the 6-digit OTP sent to the mobile number you provided and click Validate. Once the process is complete, your PAN Aadhaar linking request will be submitted successfully and you can check the status on the e Filing portal.

To check your PAN Aadhaar linking status, visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal and select Link Aadhaar/View Status under the Quick Links section. If you are logged in, you can also find this option on your dashboard. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers, then click View Link Aadhaar Status. The portal will show if the documents have been successfully linked, still under verification or if any further action is required.
