FIIs sell Indian shares for second day, DIIs step up buying to ₹4,353 crore


Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling streak in Indian equities on Thursday, August 13, offloading shares worth ₹510.69 crore on a provisional basis. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), meanwhile, stepped up buying activity, emerging as net buyers of ₹4,353.09 crore.

FIIs bought equities worth ₹14,492.46 crore during the session, while their sell value stood at ₹15,003.15 crore, resulting in net selling of ₹510.69 crore.

The latest outflow comes a day after FIIs had turned net sellers, offloading ₹1,002.50 crore in equities on Wednesday. Their selling on Wednesday had marked a reversal from Tuesday, when they were net buyers for a third straight session.

On Thursday, DIIs bought equities worth ₹16,565.14 crore, compared with sales of ₹12,212.05 crore, resulting in net buying of ₹4,353.09 crore.

The fund-flow trend shows continued divergence between foreign and domestic institutional activity, with DIIs absorbing the selling pressure from FIIs during the session.

Separately, Indian equity benchmarks ended Thursday’s session near flat levels, with the Nifty failing to hold the 24,400 mark, while the broader midcap segment outperformed the headline indices. The Sensex gained 114 points to close at 78,080, while the Nifty slipped 40 points to 24,396.

The Nifty Bank index fell 251 points to 57,635, while the midcap index rose 97 points to 64,122. Market breadth remained largely neutral, with the advance-decline ratio at around 1:1.

Tata Group stocks staged a recovery during the session, with Tata Consumer Products and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles among the top Nifty gainers.On the other side, concerns around royalty payments for the Aditya Birla Group brand weighed on group stocks. Hindalco emerged as the top Nifty loser, while UltraTech Cement and Grasim Industries also ended nearly 2% lower.

Several stocks saw sharp moves following their quarterly results. Astral and Sonal Industries rose around 8% each after reporting better-than-expected Q1 results.

Page Industries slipped nearly 5% after its earnings missed expectations, while NALCO fell nearly 5% as aluminium prices declined overnight.

The rupee closed at ₹95.44 against the US dollar on Thursday, weakening from Wednesday’s close of ₹95.33 per dollar.
